Flashcards or Learning Memos for Young Children

Young children, especially infants, are curious and learn through play and observation every single day of their lives. While playing together with flashcards or learning memos, you can teach them various things without overtaxing them. Games such as the one below works perfectly for providing a relaxing learning process:

  • The learning card memo game: This game is especially popular for children and the whole family to play together. In this kind of printable game which consists of flashcards for infants, you can design your own simple memos with 16 pairs of cards or, if you want, larger ones with 32 pairs with some help. Then have them printed. You can add pictures, colors and texts – just as you like and easily! To use them as learning memos, you can pick and choose from the following topics:
    • Colors
    • Shapes
    • Letters
    • Numbers
    • Animals
    • Words
    • Vegetables/Fruits
    • Household objects
    • For older children: multilingual card pairs can be recommended. (For example, a Turkish flashcard and the matching English flashcard can make a pair.)

Feel free to add anything else you can think of; whether they are black and white flashcards for infants or completely colorized, the best flashcards for infants in your case depends on the surroundings of your baby: you, as the parent. An additional tip! You can also teach your child nursery rhymes; it’ll add up to your baby’s education just as flashcards.

Flashcards for Infants as Playing Cards

For slightly older children who can already read, you can also create cards with matching terms.

There are no limits to your imagination, because even on an individual online card game you can always design your flashcards with texts, pictures, and colors as you wish!

You can write descriptive texts, explanations and interesting facts to the pictures: increasing the difficulty little by little.

You might ask whether flashcards work for babies or not. But what is actually important here is more about motivating your baby to use the flashcards. Even with babies who have not yet begun to speak, the intensive communication during the playtime will encourage the baby to seek methods of self-expression and involvement in the play-process. You or your child take turns drawing a card and then everyone tells what they already know about that topic. This way, you can discuss exciting things, learn from each other, and get to the bottom of questions that may arise.

Learning by Heart with Cards

Learning with index cards and learning with flashcards for infants have been proven to be useful for decades. The greatest significant facts are composed in a concentrated way and written on small cards. These are gone through again and again.

The benefits of flashcards for babies:

  1. They are small and handy for infants: the small size calms the brain, because a stack of books or a scary gray tome can be demotivating.
  2. Your child can celebrate their small accomplishments: Each flashcard that has been gone through can be put away. Each putting away has the same effect as a small task being completed, as the brain repeatedly gets the feedback: “another one done!” Flashcards definitely help in increasing motivation.
  3. They combine reading and repetition, thus increasing the learning effect.
  4. They can be carried anywhere.
  5. They can be made for literally every learning subject.

Learning with flashcards for infants is simple but confirmed to be efficient. For more durable and modern cards, here you have the opportunity to design your own personal cards with the appropriate learning content – easily online and per game! The beauty of this is that they are of higher quality and look much better than handwritten flashcards – which also makes them even more fun to use.

If you have ever tried to learn a foreign language, you know that tasks such as learning new vocabulary are monotonous and boring. How to use flashcards for babies so that this monotony is no more? With language learning cards you can help your child playfully and individually learn, practice and repeat vocabulary, contexts, whole sentences and everyday conversation!

In most of the examples you can see a nice extension of the simplest vocabulary cards: On these you can find phrases and contexts beyond the specific word that matches the topic. This not only expands vocabulary, but also helps a lot in gaining fluency and the overall understanding of the language. Vocabulary comes alive in its contexts.

To increase difficulty and variety:  Babies who are learning a language can begin to form complete sentences and short texts from the individual words and word groups!

Varied Flashcard Learning for Children

Depending on the subject, children face different challenges and have to understand and internalize vocabulary, contexts, backgrounds or concrete facts. Even though everybody learns something new every day, learning is a complex matter. Under pressure or with little joy, it is often difficult and becomes a torture. Successful learning, however, can be promoted by factors such as:

  •  Incorporating fun;
  • Arousing interest and curiosity;
  • Sufficient sleep as well as physical exercise;
  • The presence of motivating and varied learning materials;
  • A sense of achievement in learning;
  • Learning based on questions;
  • Regular repetition;
  • Verbal presentation, and
  • Internalization through reading.

brain and motivation can be supported – and they should be, so that learning is successful.

With self-designed flashcards for infants and children, you can easily put these insights into practice – for example, in this following way:

  • Joint learning game: For school children you may design flashcards together with your child for upcoming papers, exams or basics that are still difficult for your child. Even as you create, your child is learning while, together, you figure out what is relevant. In addition, you create a shared experience that superficially has nothing to do with learning at all. Your child can then go through the cards again and again in between – in a relaxed atmosphere and at random in a constantly changing order. The question-answer principle is varied and entertaining, since no long texts are to be read. After your child has worked with the cards for a while, you can practice together: draw a card and let your child report everything that comes to mind. This creates a sense of achievement, and at the same time you can help with any uncertainties that might have arisen. It is applicable the other way around as well: Have your child draw a card and you yourself tell what you know about the topic. You will see that your child will listen attentively and together you will find a lot of information!

Some Ways to Use Flashcards for Children

  •  Flash!

Present 2 flashcards face to face so that your baby cannot see either one. Show each

flashcards very quickly by holding them at the side between thumb and forefinger (either by sliding them or turning them very quickly) The little one must guess what it is.

  • Slowly! Slowly!

Choose the flashcards and prepare a plain cardboard sheet the same size as the flashcards. Take turns presenting the flashcards hidden by the cardboard. Gently pull the cardboard away from the flashcards and reveal the images. Inspire your infant to predict what it is. Your child will name the thing as soon as they see it enough times to recognize the image.

  •  Show it!

Tape a set of flashcards for infants to the walls around the baby room. Your infant calls out the names of the objects drawn at the same time.

Ex: give the instruction “Show me the spider!”  “Show me the butterfly!”

Your baby will listen and look around the room and point to the correct flashcard as quickly as they can.

  •  Mime the flashcard!

Show the flashcards for infants one after another and give the names of the objects in pictures. The children do a mime in response. E.g., they can pretend to eat a specific food (if using food flashcards) or they can imitate an animal (if using animal flashcards). Then, mimic different flashcards yourself to the children. The children look at the flashcards and name them. Another perfect detail about these flashcards is that they can be moved around easily. Do not forget to put them into your baby packing list before you go on a holiday.
